Submissions

SUBMISSION NEWS: Submissions are NOW closed for through 2013. At this time, we have as many authors in our stable and manuscripts for consideration as we can possibly handle. I apologize for the inconvenience, but it's just not fair to those who continue submitting material to hold you up indefinitely when other publishing companies might give you more serious consideration.

As a small (and still very young) company our authors are our number one priority. This means that the more authors we have, the less we are able to develop a one on one relationship with them. Because of that, we feel it's essential to limit the number of authors we take on and at this point, are very satisfied with our stable.

We truly hope you understand and wish you the very best of luck. Feel free to come back to the submissions page in early spring 2013 to see if our submissions status has changed. Thank you for your understanding.

Genres:

At this time we are only accepting fiction submissions. Seven Realms is not currently pursuing nonfiction works. Please refer to the list for genres to the left on this page for more information. When we do accept submissions, it is for full length novels only (at least 70,000 words, but no more than 120,000). We will consider series, however, each selection is based on individual books only.

We accept both new and previously published authors. An agent representative is not required. Please allow 6 - 8 weeks for review. If you have not heard about your submission feel free to query as to its status.

We do not accept queries by snail mail at this time.

How to Get Your Query Rejected:

  • You send in a submission for a book that doesn't fit with any of our genres.
  • You can't tell us what genre your book belongs to. We've had a few tell us, "Well, my book really doesn't fit into any genre. It's more like a mixture of..." We want books that fit well with one of the seven genres listed above. Call us short-sighted, but that's what we're looking for.
  • You don't follow the submission guidelines. Forget one or two things and that can be overlooked. Just blatantly don't follow the guidelines and your submission will be deleted without a response at all.
  • You address the email to "To Whom It May Concern" or "Gentlemen". Basically, generically that tells us you're sending out mass email queries. We strive to respond personally to each submission. We expect our queries to be personal as well. Our names are in the submission guidelines to the left of this sidebar.
  • And finally, for emphasis, we repeat the first one again...you send us a submission that doesn't fit with any of our genres.

What We Are Looking For...

The genres we publish are listed to the left of this page (be sure to pay attention to them!), but that's not what we're talking about here. Seven Realms is not only dedicated to the best fiction we can find...we're also dedicated to family reading! That means that as of September 2010, the majority of our titles will be family friendly. In terms of the movies, think of our books as being G, PG, or PG 13 rated.

There are THREE questions we ask of every submission we receive.

  1. Can it sell?
  2. Is it appropriate for a broad range of readers (i.e. Limited cursing, no gratuitous or explicit sex, etc.)?
  3. Is it FUN?! To be honest, the fun factor in a book is probably single greatest thing we consider about a submission. People read to escape. They read to have fun. They read to enjoy a time away from reality. It doesn't mean that the story has to be wall to wall laughs or vine swinging adventures. It just means that it needs to be fun, easy to read, and enjoyable. Dark is okay, but lighten it up in places. Don't take it (or yourself) too seriously. Literature may be art and a medium for a writer to express their deepest emotions and fears...but we're interested in entertaining our readers, not offering a cathartic outlet for authors. So before sending us your submissions, ask yourself this...is this a book that I would think is "fun" to read?

A NOTE TO NON-U.S. AUTHORS: We're very sorry, but at this time, we are unable to publish books from authors outside the United States (or who do not have a valid U.S. Social Security number). This is not a permanent stance and will change in the near future. Thanks for your understanding.

How can I submit a book for publication?

Though we truly desire to see everyone with a great book get published, Seven Realms maintains a high standard of excellence and we are only looking for the very best you have to offer. We receive a large number of submissions and, unfortunately, very few make it past the query stage. And out of the manuscripts we ask to see, only a handful will be added to our catalog (which is very limited at this time with an average of 5 or 6 titles per year). We are primarily looking for great story tellers; writers that know how to weave a tale and understand how to develop conflict, memorable characters, and exceptional dialog. Minor flaws in grammar or punctuation can be solved through meticulous editing, but the ability to captivate an audience is the true hallmark of a great story.

Email submissions to our managing editor, Kent Holloway at kholloway@sevenrealmspublishing. com. We also don't mind if you send queries out to multiple publishers (simultaneous submissions)...however, if we get to the point where we ask you to send your full manuscript, we request that you stop all submissions until your book can be reviewed.

PLEASE NOTE: We only accept fiction from one of the seven realms that are listed on this site. We WILL NOT consider any other genres. We do not publish literary fiction, women's fiction, erotica, or any "HARD TO IDENTIFY" genres. Please do not submit any queries other than those listed on this page. They will not be read and you won't receive a reply from us.

Keep in mind, we are only interested in full length novels or short fiction anthologies. Our standard for full length is generally around 70,000 to 110,000 words (give or take a few thousand).

Also, we cannot emphasize enough that we are only interested in COMPLETED manuscripts. This means that it has been thoroughly edited...as close to publication-ready as possible. We should not have to spend a great deal of time in the editorial process to make your book ready for print. If we feel that it will require more work to fix the problems than it's worth, we will not accept you. So find someone you trust...an old English teacher, an honest friend, or a professional editor...and spend a little extra time making sure all the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed. Thank you.

Submission Guidelines

The submission guidelines are provided here: (remember, failure to follow guidelines is a sure sign of unprofessionalism. Unprofessional writers are something that no publisher wants to deal with. So, please, be professional.)

We are seeking query letters to begin the process of consideration for your project. We do not accept full manuscripts. If you are unsure what a query letter is, there are plenty of website that offer insight and teach how to write them.

  1.  Be sure to include the name of your book in the subject heading in your email to us.
  2. Your queries should include the following information: Title, word count, genre, and author contact information, Brief description/summary of your work
  3. Chapters 1 - 3 OR the first 50 pages whichever is less (DO NOT send in the entire manuscript unless it is specifically asked for.
  4. No attachments please. Simply cut and paste your synopsis and chapters into the original email.
  5. Please understand - We are only interested in completed works. Wait to submit a query until after you have written, edited, and polished your book completely. This usually takes at least three or four drafts.

Good luck!
